Wednesday, June 18 @ 6:00pm: Families with children of all ages are invited to celebrate the start of Summer Reading! Come for Showtime Steve’s juggling skills and world-record stunts, stay to register for the 2025 Summer Reading Program and begin your reading adventure. Registration is encouraged but drop-ins are welcome as space permits.
Representatives from the Center for Literacy at the State Education Resource Center (SERC) will also be at the event to provide literacy resources and information available through SERC.
This activity is part of the Ridgefield Library’s 2025 Summer Reading Program: Level Up at Your Library and is sponsored by the Friends of the Ridgefield Library.
June 18-August 23: Level Up with Your Library and register for this year’s Summer Reading Program. All ages–children, teen and adults are invited to register starting June 1, 2025. Children and teens read each day to earn reading rewards, tickets for raffles, and badges. Children and teens can register on Beanstack and adults can register by visiting the Adult Services Desk.
June 1-6, 2025: There will be no children’s storytimes or programs from Sunday, June 1-Friday, June 6, 2025. Summer Session programs begin on Saturday, June 7. Visit our events and program calendar for the full selection of upcoming programs.
Saturday, June 7: Join us to celebrate Ridgefield’s own Maurice Sendak with a birthday celebration!
Wild Things Family Storytime from 10:30-11:00 am: For families with children of all ages. Celebrate Maurice Sendak’s birthday by joining Ms. Kathleen for an all-age Wild Rumpus. We’ll stomp, sing and read together! Stay for a chance to take a photo with a Wild Thing mascot and practice your roars together! Registration is encouraged but drop-ins are welcome as space permits.
Wild Thing Photo Op from 11:00-11:30 am: For children of all ages. Roar your terrible roars and show your terrible claws while taking a photo with a Wild Thing! Our costumed mascot character will be on hand for a meet & greet immediately following our Storytime to celebrate Maurice Sendak’s birthday. No registration required.
Collaborative Cardboard Cake Art from 11:30 am-12:30 pm: Let’s create a wild Birthday Cake! Children in PK-2nd grade are invited to contribute to this collaborative art project in honor of Maurice Sendak’s Birthday! We’ll explore multiple mediums and materials in this sensory art project alongside Rosie Snow Voulgaris of Pop Art! Kids. (Registration is now full.)
Wild Things Theatre from 2:00-3:00 pm: Students in Grades K-5 are invited to join Theatre Director Jacquie Militano and members of the RHS Theatre Department as we celebrate Maurice Sendak’s birthday by bringing Where the Wild Things Are to life in a theatrical presentation! Every student will have a chance to contribute to the story with the guidance of RHS actors. (Registration is now full.)
Tuesday, June 10 from 4:00-6:00 pm: Celebrate Maurice Sendak’s birthday by making your own “fantasy sketches.” We’ll provide music, paper and pencils – you provide the imagination! No registration required. Children must be accompanied by an adult for all activities. For grades K-5.

Thursday, May 22 @ 4:30 pm: To Bee or Not to Bee, that is the question! Students in Grades K-2 are invited to get up close and personal with crawly critters such as giant millipedes, hissing cockroaches, and tarantulas! Learn the differences between insects and other invertebrates in this hands-on workshop with educators from Earthplace. Registration is required.

Saturday, May 17 @ 2:00 pm: Young readers and budding chefs will relish this celebration of the new book A Banquet for Cecilia: How Cecilia Chiang Revolutionized Chinese Food in America. Families with children of all ages are invited to meet author Julie Leung and illustrator Melissa Iwai. We’ll read the book, learn more about the Chinese-American chef Cecilia Chiang, and hear about the research that went into the writing and illustrations. Then we’ll craft our own dumpling treasure to take home! Registration is encouraged but drop-ins are welcome as space permits. Please register once for your family and indicate the number of children in the comments.

April 2025: The eggs are here! Our seven chicken eggs from Rent the Chicken are currently being incubated at the Ridgefield Library. Our chicks are expected to hatch around April 7th. Check out our event calendar for a variety of chicken and spring-related programs for kids as we (im)patiently wait for out chickens to hatch. Our chicken cam will be available on the Library’s Youtube channel starting in the beginning of April.

Thursday, February 27th @ 6:00 pm: Students in grades K-8 are invited to join New York Times bestselling author Maria Scrivan as she shares her inspiration for the beloved Nat Enough series through childhood art, photos and stories. Come hear about Maria’s own struggles with not fitting in, her love of cartooning at an early age and her strategies for moving through doubt and fear. Young writers and readers will learn more about her creative process along with the tools and materials she uses to create each book. Registration is encouraged but drop-ins are welcome as space permits.

Wednesday, February 26: Students in Grades K-5 are invited to meet local student athlete Zoe Guerrero. Zoe is currently ranked #20 in the World in Halfpipe Snowboarding by the World Snowboarding Federation. She’ll talk about her experiences training and competing as a snowboarder and then join us as we build and race our own snowboarders in a hands-on STEAM challenge. Registration is required and opens on January 26, 2025.
